What is a birth hexagram?
The I Ching (易经) is the oldest book in the Chinese canon — older than Confucius, older than Laozi. Its 64 hexagrams are six-line figures, each composed of an upper and lower trigram drawn from the eight (☰ ☱ ☲ ☳ ☴ ☵ ☶ ☷). Together, they describe 64 archetypal situations of change.
A birth hexagram is the hexagram derived from your specific birth moment. The 梅花易数 (plum-blossom) method takes year + month + day to compute the upper trigram, and year + month + day + hour to compute the lower trigram. The resulting hexagram is the deterministic situational frame you arrive carrying — a complement to your Western chart and BaZi.
How to read your hexagram
Each hexagram has three layers of meaning:
- 1The judgment (彖辞) — the situation's overall character. Found in 《周易本经》 and elaborated in 《彖传》.
- 2The image (象辞) — the natural metaphor. For example, Hexagram 20 觀 is "wind over earth" — observing from elevation.
- 3The lines (爻辞) — six specific positions, each with its own image. The lines describe phases within the situation.
Why this matters for self-reflection
The I Ching does not predict events. It names the shape of changeyou tend to find yourself inside. If your birth hexagram is 觀 (Hexagram 20, Contemplation), you will keep being placed in situations that ask you to see clearly before acting. If it is 漸 (Hexagram 53, Gradual Progress), your life's grammar is patient, slow movement — and forcing speed will hurt.
