What is BaZi?

BaZi (八字), or the Four Pillars of Destiny (四柱命理), is a classical Chinese metaphysical system dating back to the Tang dynasty. It maps a person's birth moment onto eight characters — two for each of the year, month, day, and hour pillars. Each character is one of ten heavenly stems (天干) or one of twelve earthly branches (地支), and each carries one of the five elements: wood (木), fire (火), earth (土), metal (金), or water (水).

The day pillar's heavenly stem is called the day master (日主) — it represents you. Everything else in the chart is read in relation to this self. The balance and interaction of the five elements around your day master determines temperament, life rhythm, career inclination, and the seasons in which you flourish or struggle.

How is BaZi different from Western astrology?

Western astrology reads where the sky is at your birth — planets, signs, houses, aspects. BaZi reads which season and houryou were born into the Chinese solar-lunar calendar — the quality of qi at that exact moment, expressed in stems and branches. They're complementary lenses: Western maps the cosmic geometry, BaZi maps the elemental ecology.

Why true solar time matters

BaZi's hour pillar (时柱) is calculated from true solar time at your birth location, not the political clock time on your birth certificate.
